Alabama Relative Adoption Attorney
We have two adoption attorneys at our firm, AshLeigh Meyer Dunham & April Hare DeLuca. They have both worked in multiple counties all over Alabama handling adoptions for families. At Magic City Law, they work hard to stay on top of all of the newest issues in adoption law. Adoptions are delicate and of the utmost importance to Magic City Law.
Relative Adoption – Background
A Relative Adoption in Alabama is very common. There are many times in which a parent is unable to care for his or her child, and the family, or close relatives, take on the responsibility and care of that parent’s child.
Sometimes this is an emotionally complicated process. With one of our attorneys, you’ll have someone who can walk you through the process. We work hard to achieve stability for you and the child. These situations often arise when there has been a very emotional factor contributing to your current situation. A lot of times the parent of the child has passed away, has fallen prey to a drug or alcohol addiction, or simply is unable to care for the child.
Who can adopt?
A relative who is related by blood or marriage to the child as a grandparent (even great), aunt, uncle, a sibling or a half-sibling may adopt under the Alabama Adoption Code. This does not extend to cousins regardless of how close they may be emotionally. Normally, these adoptions do not require the additional expenses such as a home study. Additionally, the child must reside in the relative’s home for one year prior to filing the petition, but this may be waived for good cause.
